Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We have answers.

Are you a Step-Up Provider?

We are working on it!

Do you have before or after care?

We do not. A big part of our philosophy is that children should have more time with their families. A number of our families are working families, and we encourage you to have your children at work with you if possible as well as surround them with extended relatives and local community.

What if my family likes to travel a lot?

We LOVE families that like to travel! It is an incredible experience, not only for your child, but for your family as a whole. At the start of the year, you will receive a calendared outline of the topics we will be covering so that you can follow along with enrichment ideas at home. Though we can provide additional support to help you lesson plan at home, we strongly encourage you to enjoy the time together as a family and allow the natural flow and environment of your traveling to be the best educator! We will be there when you return.

Do you administer medicine?

No, we do not. As we believe in following a natural life, we also believe that your child should remain at home when he or she is not feeling well. If your child requires medicine on a regular basis for a certain condition, we ask that you administer that medicine at home. If your child needs to take a dose of that medicine during the day, you are always welcome on campus to give your child their medicine.

How do you handle an injury during the program hours?

With a lot of love. If the injury is life threatening, you will receive an immediate phone call at the same time we will call 911.

For a severe injury, you will receive an immediate phone call where we will discuss the best way to address it depending on the specific circumstances.

For minor injuries, like scrapes and minor cuts, we will clean the area with a natural cleaner like peroxide or iodine, put a little colloidal silver on it and a band aid if needed. Oh, and we will give them a hug too. We will notify you as to what happened and how it was addressed.

Do you use screens?

No. Never. Niente. Nada. Negative. Nope. No screens will ever be used as a learning tool at The Magnolia Schoolhouse. They are damaging to developing brains, even when used educationally. We are aware of how addictive they are, and how they actually change the way developing brains grow. We ask our families to limit screen time at home as well and restrict all use of devises.

Are there any food rules or restrictions?

Absolutely! Because a large part of our program is based on wellness and living a natural life, we do not allow foods that contain artificial ingredients (colors, flavors or harmful preservatives), as well as candy or “junk food”. We focus on the whole child and that includes their diet. We ask Parents and caretakers to be vigilant in their choice of food for their child, focusing on nutritious whole foods that fuel their body and are not loaded with sugar. Some of our locations might have certain restrictions if there are airborne or contact based allergies for any of our community members.

What medical documentation to you require?

We believe in HIPPA rights and do not ask for any documentation that is not absolutely necessary for the care of your child. We only inquire about allergies or medical conditions that might require attention while your child is visiting our program. (Ex. diabetes, asthma, a seizure disorder or a heart condition.) No other paperwork is required.

How do we handle disciplinary matters?

We view every conflict as an opportunity for growth and learning. If there is a conflict between two children, we sit and work through that conflict with both children, helping them to understand and resolve the issue that arose. We also love to roleplay better ways of handling conflict with our kiddos.

Though we love the opportunity to learn better ways of handling life, we do not have the capacity to address behavioral issues. Should a disciplinary issue arise with a specific child, we will call the parent to pick up their child and handle the matter at home. If there are repeated calls for discipline issues, we do agree to part ways in order for that child to be in an environment that can meet his or her needs. Maria Montessori said “If the environment is prepared correctly, the child reveals himself. What we call ‘naughtiness’ is often simply a response to an environment that doesn’t meet the child’s needs.”

We want every child to be where his or her needs are being met, and they are happy and learning. We always work together with parents to ensure that is the case for their child.
